| 25.10. -10.11.02 A Visitance of Air - 1. Beachy Head, 2. The Whispering Room åpning fredag 25. oktober 2002 kl. 19.00 Vi er glade for å kunne presentere en utstilling av Roddy Bell i Trondheim, - hans første separatutstilling her i byen. Han var gjestelærer ved Kunstakademiet i Trondheim ved flere anledninger på 80-tallet og deltok på trans-arts utstilling ”ad lib” i desember 2001. Han har sin utdannelse fra Colchester School of Art, Essex, England, Edinburgh College of Art, Skottland og Goldsmiths College, University of London. Han har deltatt 8 ganger på Høstutstillingen og 10 på Vestlandsutstillingen, har hatt 13 separatutstillinger i Norge og utlandet og har deltatt på et utall av kollektiv- og gruppeutstillinger i Europa og verden for øvrig. Han er innkjøpt offentlig flere ganger og han har hatt en rekke utsmykkingsoppgaver i privat og offentlig regi, bla. på flere av plattformene i Nordsjøen. Roddy Bell har de siste 10 år markert seg kunstnerisk med en serie installasjoner hvor han blander medier og teknikker på sin egen poetiske måte. Tegning og skulpturelle elementer kombineres ofte med lyd, lys og projeksjoner til en romlig og tematisk helhetlig situasjon hvor man som tilskuer befinner seg inne i verket mer en man betrakter det utenfra. Dette er kunstnerens egen presentasjon av sitt arbeid og denne utstillingen: Roddy Bell is Scottish and has lived and worked in Norway since 1977. Since 1993, he has worked with installations which combine sculptural elements with elements of drawing, sound, texts and projections.The installations are thematic in character, often using literature, myth or metaphysics as points of departure. In 1999, his installations “Visitations (of clay and light)” and “The Angels of The Hours” were selected by curator Lars Nitve, as part of the 1st Norwegian Sculpture Biennale at the Stenersen Museum in Oslo. The works thematised historical references to angels and astrology, transforming them into contemporary metaphors for a loss of spirituality. Here, self-written texts were combined with quotations from Wim Wender´s film “In Weiter Ferne So Nah!” In “A Visitance of Air (1) Beachy Head” 1999-2002, a voice recites texts from Virginia Woolf´s “The Waves” over a layered structure of identifiable sounds which arise within a construction of wood, plastic and other materials. Small propellers waft air and an umbrella/ roundabout of small drawings slowly revolve. In “A Visitance of Air (2) The Whispering Room” 2002, eight small candles project on the wall photographic portrait images of young soldiers from The Great War. A mouth is projected on a screen and whisper – sings sad Irish folksongs. A whispering voice describes the transitoriness of youth. Every so often the mouth blows out air, and two fans respond by blowing air across the room. The flames dance and flutter. |
